2008 Satellite Direct Readout GOES DCS Workshops
The GOES Data Collection System (DCS) is a data relay system, used by many emergency
managers for the transmission of in situ data. A station on the ground can send
a scheduled transmission to the satellite, and it will be available at a receiving
site hundreds of miles away (or right in your own back yard) within seconds.
For more information about the DCS system, visit our website: http://noaasis.noaa.gov/DCS
STIWG Meeting
The Satellite Telemetry Interagency Working Group (STIWG) is a U.S. government user advisory group
for the GOES DCS. The STIWG will meet on Thursday, December 4, 2008. If you are a government user
of the DCS, or represent a U.S. government agency who might be interested in attending the STIWG,
please join us.
TWG Meeting
The GOES DCS Technical Working Group (TWG) is a meeting of all interested users of the GOES DCS.
These meetings are held 2 or 3 times a year, in the U.S., to facilitate information exchange and
coordination between NOAA/NESDIS and GOES DCS users. We are pleased to invite all interested
attendees to join us at the TWG meeting.
DCS Workshop
On Saturday, December 6, 2008, we plan a special DCS Workshop from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The purpose
of this workshop is to provide information to users on topics that will help you maintain your data
collection equipment and your networks, retrieve your data, and meet your responsibilities for
maintaining metadata in the NESDIS system. John Parks, of the United States Geological Survey (USGS)
will be cochairing this session, along with Kay Metcalf, NOAA GOES DCS Program Manager. John, a
resident of Puerto Rico, is well versed in DCS techniques, familiar with the DCS community in Latin
America, and speaks Spanish. The presentations will be bilingual when needed. While this workshop
is primarily focused on International attendees, all users are welcome to attend.
